Intense confrontations broke out when about 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho responded with gunfire, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, officials stated.

The United Nations human rights body expressed being "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".

Mission Consequences

The informal settlements adjacent to Rio's airport is considered to be the main base of among the nation's strongest organised crime groups.

State officials confirmed a minimum of 50 of the fatalities were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Dozens of people were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Local Reaction

Residents have described the elevated neighborhood - home to about 300,000 people - to a "war zone" since the mission commenced.

Access ways continue shut in the entire neighborhood.

Gang Growth

The criminal network has been increasing their control throughout the region, growing illegal substance trade paths and dominance over the slum communities.

Rio's police said in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were seized in the raid, in addition to numerous weapons.

Raid Preparation

The combined action by civil and military police comes after a extended probe.

Dozens of the suspects are thought to be members of a faction from the Pará state who are at the moment taking refuge in Rio de Janeiro.

Broader Context

Large-scale police operations are regular in Brazil prior to important worldwide conferences in the South American nation.

The UN climate summit COP30 is set to occur in the northern urban center in late autumn.
