Rescue efforts are in progress on the distant slopes in Tibet of Everest, where a heavy blizzard has trapped around 1,000 individuals in temporary shelters on the east side of the mountain.

Several hundred local villagers and response units have been dispatched to clear out heavy snowfall blocking entry to the area, which rests at an altitude of more than 4,900 meters.

Several visitors have been evacuated successfully from the dangerous location.

Intense snow started on Friday night and has worsened on the eastern slopes of Mount Everest in Tibet, an region frequented by climbers and trekkers.

Authorities confirm that shelters had given way due to the snow accumulation, and some individuals were experiencing low body temperature.

Entry passes and access to the Everest tourism site have been suspended from Saturday.

The region is experiencing extreme weather, with adjacent Nepal being hit hard by heavy rains that have caused landslides and flash floods, destroying bridges and claiming the lives of at least 47 individuals in the recent two-day period.

In the region, a tropical storm has made landfall, forcing around one hundred fifty thousand residents to leave from their houses.

Mount Everest is the planet's tallest mountain at over 8,849m. Although numerous climbers seek to conquer the summit annually, it is regarded as an highly perilous climb.

In recent years, it has been plagued with issues with over-tourism, conservation challenges, and a string of tragic ascents.
