The Fianna Fáil nominee exited Ireland's presidential race just weeks ahead of the election

Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin stated his withdrawal from the Irish presidential election immediately.

He was scheduled to be a candidate among three competing for Ireland's head of state, alongside Independent TD Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys of Fine Gael.

Nonetheless, Sunday night he announced in a statement that he "committed an error inconsistent with his values and his personal standards."

"Considering all these factors, I have decided to exit the presidential race with immediate effect and reunite with my loved ones," he declared in a statement.

Additional details to come.
