Suspect Arrested In the Wake of No Fewer Than 50 Shots Fired from Sydney Residence

A male suspect aged 60 has been arrested following a shooting that injured at least one person, multiple individuals harmed and several automobiles targeted by gunfire by an armed individual in the Croydon Park area.

An estimated 100 shots were fired across a span of two hours from 7:45 PM to 9:30 PM Sunday evening in Croydon Park.

Law Enforcement Begin Substantial Action

Thoroughfares were blocked and the vicinity was secured under lockdown following the start of a significant police operation in response to information a suspect was haphazardly discharging a weapon towards drivers, encompassing law enforcement automobiles, travelling along Georges River Road.

Specialist police teams was called in to arrest the male suspect aged 60 from an apartment situated over a shop adjacent to the bustling roadway.

Police Leadership Provide Details

Acting Superintendent Stephen Parry informed the press on Sunday night it was unclear about the precise count of bullets let off “but there could have been anywhere between 50 and 100 shots that were fired”.

The NSW police commissioner, Mal Lanyon stated law enforcement's wearable cameras demonstrated how close officers came to being hit while they sought shelter throughout the "grave and frightening event".

An officer who was fired upon had just graduated from the academy just five weeks prior, Lanyon mentioned.

It came down to chance that additional individuals were not injured, the acting assistant commissioner Trent King said.

“This is unheard of in Sydney to witness an occurrence of this kind, with such a large number of shots fired,” he stated to the ABC radio station on Monday.
“We’re very fortunate that further destruction was avoided and clearly further casualties or potentially deaths.”

King said it likely was alarming for the general public and responding police officers.

“To clarify the responding police came under gunfire. Law enforcement automobiles incurred harm and we’re very fortunate that no police have been injured.”

Alleged Shooter in Detention

The male suspect aged 60 remained in police custody at Bankstown hospital and was slated for questioning and officially charged during Monday.

Guns, such as a large-caliber rifle, were taken into custody upon his detention, law enforcement stated.

Bystander Account

One eyewitness to the shooting told the ABC he was passing through and “detected multiple banging sounds on the left side of the car, the taxi”.

“Subsequently, I glanced beside me, and I spotted a few openings on the passenger-side window,” he said.
“It escaped my notice that a hole was also present on the roof. And I smelled the gunpowder, but I assumed since it was the night of the NRL grand final, it might be someone setting off firecrackers or similar.”
